Abstract
Tetanus is an acute centralnervous system intoxication and neuromucular disorders caused by
exotoxin of Clostridium tetani; anaerobic gram positive bacillus.
Author contemplated a clinical review of tetanus in 24 cases during the 10 years period from
Jul. 1959 to Apr. 1970 at the Dept. of General Surgery of Pusan National University Hospital.
The following results were obtained;
1. The most frequent age group was from 10 to 19 years in cases of 9(37.5%) and 2:1 of
male to female sex ratio. The children and senile patients assumed poor prognosis and serious
clinical course.
2. Ten cases (41.6%) of these had 1 or 2 weeks of incubation period. The shorter the incu
bation, the worse the prognosis.
3. In 13 cases (54.1%) had a open injury as a mode of infection.
4. Causative wounds were chiefly located in the lower extremities in 10 cases (41.6%) and
there were worse prognosis in case of causative wound located on the face or scalp.
5. Mortality raterevealed in 6 cases(25%) and its main cause of death was respiratory arrest
in 4 cases and aspiration pneumonia 2 cases.
6. There was no notiveable relationship between fiven dosis of tetanus antitoxin and clinical
course.
